Photograph 0010 - 5ACS RAAF Personnel Darwin River Quarry 1959

The RAAF Darwin River Quarry was established to supply blue metal for the construction of 11/29 the then new airstrip at RAAF Darwin. Located near Darwin River Dam the quarry closed in the early sixties. These wagon drills were in action at the Darwin River Quarry face in 1959. The blue metal being extracted was used as the foundation for the new runway. Larry Looper Williams is second from the left and I think the two in peak caps were ACS truck drivers trying their hand at drilling.

Photographer: Ken Hodge

A twenty minute DVD of 5ACS taken by the RAAF film team showing most facets of the Darwin airstrip construction including a short piece on Darwin River Quarry is now available from the NAA [National Archives of Australia] for about $25. If you would like to try before you buy I think you can arrange a viewing at any of the NAA buildings around Australia.

The series number is C5423 and the control symbol is 1407413.
