This years festival of lights are Pukekura Park bought a special treat in the form of a public art installation on Poets Bridge. These glowing dragonflies were created, by artist unknown, from plastic drink bottles, straws and some clear plastic sheet which had been scored to create a nice texture.
Shooting these effectively was a real challenge! There was around 10 stops of luminance difference between the foreground and background. I ended up shooting 8 shots, each 2 EV brighter than the previous and merging them as an HDR image. This was compounded by a bridge full of people and not being able to set up a tripod. In the end I shot them hand held, resting on the guard rail. The longest exposure in the set was 30 sec at f/5.6.
