Cannonball Tree #2: FLOWER (NAGLINGAM / KAILASPATI)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cannonball trees are grown extensively around temples of Lord Shiva in India.

It is considered sacred by the Hindus because the petals of the flower resemble the hood of the Naga, a sacred snake, protecting a Shiva Lingam, the stigma. Hence the name, Naglingam.

Other names are:

KAILASPATI

MALLIKARJUNA

NAGALINGA PUSHPA

NAGAMALLI

SHIVALINGA

One of hundreds of spent and fallen flowers on the ground.

Couroupita guianensis

Family Lecythidaceae

Fruit & Spice Park, Homestead, Florida, USA.
