"Cobblestone Street" in Gamla stan - Stockholm

Photo is taken after a short but intense rain shower in Stockholm Old Town (Gamla Stan) .... Well it is more than just "old". Here, there are remnants - some of which are still functional - all the way from the Viking era. The oldest building is from around 650AD.

The Old Town is Stockholm's most popular tourist attraction - Its buildings and architecture offer an Odyssey through not only the Viking era but also through the medieval history of Sweden, and the historical period during which Sweden was the region's superpower, where "region" refers to parts of (what is now) modern Russia all along the Volga river down to the Black Sea, and Southwards (much later) all the way to Alsace in France.

Very close to where this photo was taken - see the Grand Square or Stortorget in this photostream - a fierce battle was fought between the Swedes and the Danes over the supremacy of the Baltic Sea.

The Royal Palace is situated just a few hundred meters from where this photo was taken.
