Bullcarts in Trinidad Canefield 1965
In this 1965 photo, a canefield is being reaped . This was a timeless scene, now vanished from the landscape. By the time this shot was taken, the water buffalo (bison or hog cattle in local jargon) had already usurped the hardy mule as the chosen beast of burden in the canefield. The coming of motor vehicles on the roads of the island spelled the end of the line for blacksmiths and wheelwrights which is why this late shot shows carts rolling on truck rims shod in rubber tires.
