We are now in Piazza Vecchia. The old square of the upper town of Bergamo.
It is the noble heart of the Upper Town. So it was called by the famous architect Le Corbusier: "Perfect, no need to touch a stone." Admire the Palazzo della Ragione, the Civic Tower (1100 A.D.) and the beautiful fountain of Contarini (1780 A.D.).
The City Library Angelo Mai of Bergamo is the main institution of historic preservation librarian of Bergamo circuit.
It is headquartered in New Palace of the Upper Town , in a position opposite to the Palazzo della Ragione closes, to the northeast, the Old Town Square .
Born in the late '60s and early' 70s of the eighteenth century when it was made available to the citizens the library legacy that the Cardinal Alessandro Giuseppe Furietti had done to the city . His first position was in a room of the New Palace that housed the Municipality . Transferred in 1797 at the rectory of the Cathedral, from 1843 is housed in the Palazzo della Ragione until, in 1928 , returns to its original location, now occupying the entire building.
Since opening its collection of books she has grown exponentially, both through donations and through acquisitions, to reach the current number of about 700,000 volumes , 11,000 periodicals , about 2,150 incunabula , over 12,000 sixteenth , a significant number of prints , autographs , manuscripts , photographs , artistic works and other specialist findings that make it one of the most important historical libraries d ' Italy .
The catalog of the works can be consulted directly in situ and, for the works acquired after 1976 and for the previous subject of re-cataloging, via internet through the ' OPAC Regional.
