img019 Nankeen (Roufus) Night Heron
The strange name Nankeen was populary known for in earlier days for a buff coloured cotton cloth imported from Nanking in china. This elegant bird which sports usually two long head plumes throughout the year is essentially nocturnal in habits. it is widespread across the continent in a varied habitat which includes swamps lagoons rivers and mangroves. It feeds mainly on fish but also takes a variety of other aquatic prey, insects and mice.
Breeds September - March/April. Nests in a tree high above the water, also on ground in a treeless area.
