Am I wrong? Or is 24mm fuzzy and 85mm sharp as a tack

Stop down one stop and the performance is pretty good at both 24mm and 85mm. See my review www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikon_Nikkor_AF-S_24-85mm_f3-5...
I find that a longer focal length tends to fool the eye in its favor because of the larger details you're (naturally) seeing because of the larger magnification.
You might also want to take a look at the 24-70/85 Shootout which shows the performance of the 24-85 in comparison to the Nikon 24-70/2.8G and the Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC here: www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikon_vs_Tamron_24-70mm_compar...
