Material for my three-way shootout of current 85mm lenses for Nikon. From left to right: AF-S 85/1.4G, AF-S 85/1.8G, AF 85/1.8D.
The Sigma AF 85/1.4 EXDG HSM will be added to the fray!

I just ordered the 85mm 1.8g. Is this a good lens when it comes to shallow DOF? Is it also good for portraits and candid photography? I plan on doing candid shots of people in downtown of Chicago as well as portraits. Thanks in advance!

I've been reading up on lenses too so will watch this space with avid interest - find it easier to spot differences when the image is more closeup than landscape if that makes sense

The 85/1.8G is an excellent lens and does almost anything the 85/1.4G does.
Unfortunately I've still to write-up my findings in a proper review at www.cameralabs.com but if you want some early information from my research have a look here

      Tombomba, what will you consider between a nikkor 24-70 & 85mm 1.4G?

      24-70/2.8 being much more versatile.
