While I was walking on Knoxville's Third Creek Greenway on a bright day in June a fellow from California asked me to show him how to recognize poison ivy. "Is that the one with five leaves?" he asked. Since I was standing on some poison ivy at the moment, it was easy to show him what it looks like. Note the marked asymmetry of the two lateral leaves and the less prominent asymmetry of the middle leaf around their midveins. Toxicodendron radicans (Anacardiaceae, along with the mango, the avocado, and the cashew nut). Formerly Rhus toxicodendron, which sounds like the name of a 40's Big Band (Now let's all listen to the music of Russ Toxicodendron and his Poison Ivy Leaguers.)
