mangosteens | by Bob Richmond

My mother read me a book that mentioned mangosteens when I had just turned five, in 1944. I remember wanting to taste mangosteens. Finally at the age of 70 I tasted them for the very first time. I went to my favorite Chinese grocery store and there they were - never saw one before in my life - from Thailand - about a buck each. Said to be the world's most delicious fruit. The Wikipedia article on the "purple mangosteen" describes it as tasting like something between citrusy and peach, and I couldn't improve on that. The white edible part is enclosed in an inedible purple rind. A mango and mangosteen are unrelated to each other.
