los portales y cathedral, Campeche

A mix of two great civilizations, Maya and Spanish, the walled city of Campeche was found in 1540. It is a port city on the Gulf of Mexico, with beautiful colonial buildings, lush tropical vegetation and parks, good food ( famous for their shrimp cocktail) and hospitable native population (about 260,000). Although it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, it is still a relatively sleepy town with few tourists. I personally hope it remains that way.
