A woman and her friends run a brick-selling business, Madagascar

Thérèse Razafindravola and her friends invested in a business making bricks, which they sell on the side of the road to construction workers. With a loan of 300,000 Malagasy francs each (US$32), the group was able to invest in the tools they needed to take advantage of the opportunity, and are now able to take home about US$10 a month in profits - twice what they earned before. "Business is booming!" exclaimed Thérèse. "As long as people keep building new homes and businesses, we'll be busy." Photo: UNCDF/Adam Rogers, 2005
