Plankton: Running on Empty!

♫ Running on Empty – Jackson Brown ♫

Plankton and I rolled into Death Valley Junction on fumes. The wind was whipping madly, a weathered sign banged loudly on rusty chains and tumbleweeds spun wildly down the road (it's true; there really were tumbleweeds)!

If you believe every thing you read on Wikipedia you'd be worried at about right now as it will tell you there isn't a gas station in Death Valley Junction. Good thing there was a station; but it came at a price! I gasped when I saw the sign: $4.38 / gallon! But I sucked it up and paid a princely sum to fill my tank. It just isn't a good idea to be 'running on empty' in the Mojave Desert!

Since February, gas prices have skyrocketed. I've paid much more for a gallon of gas than I did in Death Valley Junction. In fact, the price I paid in Big Sur in April was the most I've ever paid for gas. I paid a whopping $5.49 / gallon!! *gasp*

I really wish that I had arrived at this junction back in its hey day, when that Chevron gas pump (image in comments) was shiny and sparkly ... and dispensing gas for only .44¢ / gallon ... and the attendant out there shooting the breeze with me ... washing my windshield and checking my oil. Remember those days?

Happy Toy-in-the-Frame Thursday!!

so darling, I love that you travel with Plankton!!! Sigh...we get excited now if gas is under 4.00.

Oh, fantastic shots, Trina! Don't tell Plankton, but I actually remember $.20/gal (and being incensed when it got to $.25 because that meant that $2.00 would not fill my 10 gallon tank anymore!) Sigh!

Enjoy! Can't wait to see what else you and Plankton get into!

P.S. Thanks for the song, too! Great driving song, as long as you don't fulfill the sentiment!

So, I discovered a long, long time ago and I'm very allergic to tumbleweeds. You know how I found this out? In grade school, I thought it would be a great idea to dress up as a tumbleweed for Halloween. And seeing that there were plenty in the neighborhood I grew up in, I grabbed a big one, hollowed out the middle a bit and jumped in. Biiiiiiiiiggggg mistake. :-)

From that time on, for some crazy reason, I've never been a big fan of the desert. But, I've heard over and over again that Death Valley is worth the visit (if you go the right time of year, of course.) So, I'm once again envious of your travels. And of your photographic skills, of course. Ol' "One Eye" has never looked so good as at the wheel of a classic Chevy. And I really like how the view out the windows is so color coordinated too. Sweet.

Haha, Plankton is taking over! This is so cool. :) I'm also glad that you didn't run out of petrol, I bet that would've kinda ruined the California trip.

Fantastic composition and DOF, not to mention the humorous combination of visual subjects. I especially like the light quality and Plankton's green against the rusty auto interior. Well done!

Plankton is adorable in his vintage ride and I guess if you had to pay so much for gas at least it was a good photo op right :)?
