A royal shower tree
Kapi‘olani Regional Park, Waikīkī.
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan visited Hawai‘i from July 14-16th, 2009. One of the first things that the royal couple did upon arriving in Hawai‘i was to visit the Rainbow Shower Tree the Emperor, then Crown Prince, had planted on a previous visit in 1960.
I went looking for the 49-year old tree at Kapi‘olani Regional Park after the huge crowds had long gone. It is a beautiful healthy tree with pretty blossoms of yellow and pinkish-peach color.
