Backworth RSH No 4, 'smokeless' locomotive

Pictured in the Backworth area in 1966. This engine has an unusual chimney, the reason being that this locomotive was modified by my dad at Seaton Delaval workshops in the early 1960's to run smokeless.

This was due to the engine operating through a housing estate in the Backworth/Burradon area. He has no idea as to how effective the conversion was but says that the smokebox was extensively modified and a 'self stoker' operated by two steam pistons was also fitted. Very unusual in a locomotive of this size.
