Da Said Men Don't Cry

Da Said "Men don't cry" by Ray Lonsdale, unveiled in Hetton-le-Hole 27th April 2019, commemorating the local coal mining heritage.

His poem accompanying this sculpture reads:

'"This is it son, first shift down the pit,

Go with your head held high,

Take care where you stand, take more where you sit,

And don't let the lads see you cry.

Forget the classroom with its polished floors,

Some roads are not for us.

There are many schools and this one's yours."

Wiped his eye and cursed the dust.'
