Southern Railway - a Souvenir of Southampton Docks, c1930

A stirring view capturing the bustle of the Port of Southampton, the Docks having been largely developed by the Southern Railway's predecessor companies, and that the Southern rightly saw as the jewel in their maritime crown. Many passenger and goods vessels sailed from the port - and this illustration, ostensiably of Southampton Water, carefully blends the shipping in the waters of the Solent with the almost cloud-like outline of the globe that the port served, the 'Southampton' mast pennant carefully marking the position of the city!
