Bruléed Chocolate Mocha Crepe Cake

I feel I've been playing it safe a lot in terms of styling lately since I keep having only 10-15 minutes to get a shot before I have to run to somewhere else. I was trying to do a monochromatic effect with the background linen, but looking at the result I think a contrasting color would've worked better. What do you think?

    Gosh. *faint* Do you realize how neat and fabulous this is! As for the picture, it makes me want to give up my diet and go grab it. So yes I think its fabulous!

    Colorwise the background works fine, but I have a feeling it would require more character in order to contribute to the interestingness of the image. You have played it safe, as you say. All the elements are there, but the construct could be stronger, more exciting. I would like to see these handsome crepes more connected to the situation or people involved, or to you as a photographer. Do you know what I mean? Even if there was a splash of chocolate sauce on a plate or a spoon, it would indicate the crepes are not only pretty to look but delicious to eat.

    Thanks, Laksmi. I agree with you. There actually is a splash of sauce on the front plate but I guess it's so small and hidden by the spoon that it's not effective. I was considering adding sauce to the spoon but was worried it'd look to messy and I'd have no time to correct it then. With more time, I would've liked also to add a napkin or other fabric of some sort to break up the background and add a human feel to the setting. Hindsight 20/20, eh?

    I miss a lot of things from this shot, mostly YOU. It shows, that you just snapped this shot and didn't put yourself in as usually.
    Btw the cake looks tasty...

    We have to create an internet rehab for Xiaolu. An intervention. She has spent so much time in social media that she has lost herself :-)

    I think Vera and Laksmi have said it, and I agree. This isn't a 'Xiaolu shot', but it is beautiful nonetheless.:) I would have liked a crumpled napkin and maybe a bit eaten out of that piece. Like you said, add human feel. All those things apart, I am wondering how you cut such perfect slices! They look gorgeous! This reminds me of a Goan dessert called dodol, which is a layered cake. It is not made this way but looks like this after cutting.

    Well I appreiate everyone's honesty and will try to put more of my unique style into my photos. Not to keep pulling that reason out, but I literally did have 10 minutes to shoot this and had not prepared props in advance to play with different settings. If I need rehab for anything, it's procrastinating and overbooking my time 8).

    Harini - no tricks. The fairly thick chocolate filling makes this cake pretty easy/neat to slice.
