Red Owl

The old Red Owl grocery stores that were in the Milwaukee area for awhile. I remember one not too far from where I grew up in West Allis. Now under a new incarnation as a CVS Pharmacy.

My parents used to shop at the Red Owl that once stood at S. 27th St. and Parnell Ave. before a large bowling alley was built there which has now been replaced by something else.

I remember that Red Owl had a promotion sometime in the early 1960s and gave away a two-part, pull apart key chain with the head of the Owl in green (?!) plastic, and the bottom feet part in phosphorent white plastic the sides of which could be compressed allowing the white part with one set of one's keys to separate from the upper green part that was to hold another set of keys. It may sound odd, but it was cute and I used it as a zipper fob on my sage green fall jacket for years; I never saw another such keys thing, and mine disappeared with that jacket decades ago. Such is my memory of Red Owl, which I believe was based in Minneapolis.
