Black Grouse in flight, Upper Teesdale, County Durham (Looks better large on black)
These Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix) were photographed opportunistically when I looked over a roadside wall in Upper Teesdale. I had seen a single bird fly across the road and into this field. I hadn't expected the birds to be quite so close and the flew further down the field after a second or two.
This scarce and declining northern grouse used to have the scientific name Lyrurus (meaning Lyre-tailed) but was reclassified as Tetrao (Latin for a game bird) the same genus as Capercaillie.
