Black Grouse, Upper Teesdale, County Durham
This is a male Black Grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) photographed from a road in Upper Teesdale. I saw a flying Black Grouse disappear over a dry stone wall into a field. I parked and crept along the road, gingerly peering over the wall where I thought he had landed. There were three birds sat quite close, but flew after a few seconds. They were not on their displaying ground, or leck as it is known. I had watched them lecking not far away a couple of hours earlier but they were too far for a decent photograph.
