Mexican Folk Art Inspired Embroidered Cyclops Fly Felt Ornament

Unique embroidered cyclops fly felt stuffed ornament inspired by the folk art of Mexico.

I wanted to revisit my love of insects and started with a realistic acrylic bright blue doll eye to which I added eyelids of black wool felt. The plump body of the fly is black wool felt, which I embroidered using both tapestry and bead embroidery techniques and then filled with polyfill stuffing. I primarily used split stitch and accented the colorful embroidery with red, turquoise and gold colored seed beads. The wings are made of double layers of red wool felt over stiff fabric interfacing so that the wings don't flop when the fly is hanging. The wings are both embroidered and edged with beads to give this fellow a little extra pizazz. The cyclops fly also has beaded antennae that are on a base of brass wire and can be bent at a different angle if desired. This unique decoration has a double loop of black grossgrain ribbon for hanging purposes.

Please note that this ornament is completely made by hand - every bead and stitch was done manually. I used high quality wool felt throughout which is a thick felt made of wool and rayon.
