My early morning weed pulling work uncovered another syringe among the weeds along the wall in front of the house.
The problems with the needles were at their worst three years ago when I was finding them along the sidewalk in front of the house and around the church grounds on a weekly basis. Back then a drugged-up, young woman collapsed in front of the church one night.
Lately it hasn't been too bad, and this looks like an old syringe. However, according to the paper, per capita Espanola still leads the nation in deaths from heroin overdoses.
The methadone clinic in Espanola is busier than a Starbucks in any normal town. Driving past the clinic in the mornings is always a risky maneuver with cars lined up on the side of the street and in the median of one of the two main "arteries" leading out of town.
