(SAH01-130400.JPG) POTTSTOWN PENNSYLVANIA 01/04/92 Nuclear Power Plant cooling towers with steam billowing into a stiff breze. 1992 file photo. The Limerick Nuclear Power Plant was first started to nuclear criticality in 1989 and went online for commercial electrical production in January of 1990. PECO operates the 1055 megawatt plant which was constructed by Bechtel. Environmetally, Nuclear power has one main advantage, it emits no greenhouse gasses, but it does produce a variety of solid and liquid radioactive wastes including high level wastes. Storage for high level waste is problematic because some radioctive elements in these wastes will remain dangerously radioactive for thousands of years. A particular concern is Plutonium, which is procuced as a by prodoct of the fission process. Plutonium has a long half life and it can also be used for nuclear weapons production so is a potential security problem as well. .. © STEVEN HOLT/PICTUREDESK
