Barbara Jones (1912-1978) was a brilliant designer, artist and writer. The University of Brighton Design Archives holds records and photographs relating to the radical exhibition of popular art which Jones organized at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1951 entitled ‘Black Eyes & Lemonade’. It also houses records of her work at the Festival of Britain and also some earlier photographs of the murals she designed for the Things for Children section of the Britain Can Make It exhibition in 1946. For Jones, exhibition projects presented an opportunity to develop many of the ideas she also explored through her effusive writing and audacious drawings. She challenged established ideas about museum and gallery culture and the value attached to particular kinds of objects.
