Klimcentrum Bjoeks, Groningen, the Netherlands

Our country is as flat as a pancake, we have no mountains nor rocks to climb. So we need to be inventive if we want to practice climbing. This tower is a steel and wood construction, 37 metres high, with an overhang of 11 metres.

Picture taken using a camera suspended from a kite in Groningen, the Netherlands.

Image uncropped - this is how it came out of the camera.

    Fantastic series!
  • Vicente Piorno 7y

    Great series, I agree.

Did you use the zoom in this one? If not, you were really close!
  • Eric Kieboom PRO 7y

    Thanks for the kind comments

I have no way (yet) of actuating the zoom from the ground. The camera was indeed pretty close here. I was afraid it would crash into the tower at one point, but luckily it didn't. I did get the kite line stuck on the top of the tower, though, but I managed to free it.

One of my more exhilarating KAP sessions, I'd say.

Love that your camera shadow is in there too. Great shot and it looks higher than 35 meters.
  • Rob Huntley PRO 7y

Great image. I'd be afraid of distracting the climbers and causing a fall.

Keeper! With CHDK you can write a script to zoom while in flight. May help in the future. See details here.

Rob: I asked permission to KAP before I started. When I started KAPing nobody was climbing, the climber came out as I was doing my thing. He looked at the kite and camera before he started and didn't seem bothered at all by it. I figured he would have complained to me before scaling the tower if it had been a problem.

Wind Watcher: thanks for the script, I'll look into it. I'm running CHDK in my IXUS 850IS now, with just a simple USB remote script.

Excellent. the entire serie is fantastic. The subject is unique, the light and shadows are great, the exposure is perefect.

Very cool! I really like the series. Who knew such a big climbing wall existed?

I just found some of your pictures on 9GAG, and tried to give you the credits.

Thanks, Ricardo. These images are the ones that are most frequently stolen. I've mostly given up trying to protect my rights, unless the thief is commercial.

Il y a quelques années ça m'aurait bien tenté...
