    A black and white non-photographic lantern slide of the HMS Agamemnon shown during the 1858 laying of the Atlantic telegraph cable. A group of figures can be seen on the top deck and the tail of a whale is visible in the foreground.

    The HMS Agamemnon launched in 1852. This image is a copy of the watercolour painted by Robert Charles Dudley in 1865-6. The original is now held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
