The Blacktip Shark (Carcharhinus limbatus) is a large, stout shark, with a long, pointed snout and small eyes. Its torpedo-shaped body, grey or grey-brown on the back and white on the belly, allows it to cut easily through the water, and a conspicuous white stripe runs along the flanks. Average size about 150 cm and 18 kg, maximum 255 cm.
As its name suggests, the pectoral fins, the second dorsal fin and the top part of the tail fin have black tips. The first dorsal fin and lower part of the tail fin are usually edged with black.
Other common names used for the blacktip shark include blackfin shark, blacktip whaler, common or small blacktip shark, grey shark, and spotfin ground shark.
The blacktip shark has a worldwide distribution in tropical and subtropical waters, including brackish habitats. Favored habitats are muddy bays, island lagoons, and the drop-offs near coral reefs.
Most blacktip sharks are found in water less than 30 m deep over continental and insular shelves, though they may dive to 64 m. It is primarily a fish-eater (sardines, herrings, anchovies) as well as small or young sharks, but its diet also contains smaller amounts of crustaceans, such as shrimp and crabs.
This picture is taken in the large shark tank of Burgers Ocean, a part of Burgers Zoo in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Burgers Ocean consists of 11 very big bassins with a total content of over 8 million litres of seawater. The largest bassin (the shark tank: 3 million liters) is protected by the largest window in the world of 100 m2 and 35 cm thick glass. For keeping the water clean there are 10 km in piping and a pumping capacity of 1.050 m3 per hour. They are able to produce an equavilant of 57.000 litres seawater.
In the aquariums of Burgers Ocean live over 3000 fish in 160 species, and over 5000 invertebrates in over 200 species (including 3000 corals in about 100 species), plus numerous polyps and the like.
