Rotterdam's Zoo "Blijdorp" announced the welcome addition of another Asian Elephant, a girl named "Faya", on Tuesday evening 20 July, 2010.
The calf weighed in at 75 kg but zoo authorities say baby elephant was, "on the small side".
Despite its small size, the baby elephant was up on its feet and suckling less than two hours after birth.
The zoo says the new elephant is the 14th to be born at Blijdorp and the ninth female. It is the first time that the elephant keepers decided to allow the mother to give birth outside in a natural environment with the other members of the herd around her. The zoo authorities say it is much better for the calf to be born outside; it is far easier for a newborn calf to learn to stand up on soft, sandy soil than on concrete and it also means the newborn can use more of its energy to find its mother's teat.
It is the first time in the world that an elephant has been born in the same zoo as both its parents, whether parents are not related to each other. Blijdorp is now home to three generations of the same family. The herd consists of six females and one male. Because the baby was born in the outside enclosure, the public were able to see it very soon after it was born.
