well after boring everyone to tears with photos of deer - im now going to do the same with seals!
on monday i arranged a trip to donna nook with “Andrew Rickman” , “GP Images Photography” and “tiffkat”
this is my third year in a row!
the first year i went, we went to the reserve and also the trek down to the sea
last year there was a small sign up saying people shouldn’t go on the beach, but i had thought it just applied to groups and kids etc as there were lots of photographers on the beach, so to my shame now i ignored it
i wanted to get a better understanding of the situation this year so i contacted the lincolnshire wildlife trust who have been very helpful
i had already heard a few horrifying stories about photographers going right up to the seals to take photos and some even throwing things to get them to look in a certain direction!
the lincolnshire wildlife trust confirmed that the pup mortality rate is 6 times higher in this area than the rest of the colony and they put a lot of this down to the numbers of visitors on the beach causing stress to the seals
they were clear to point out that they recognise the atrocious behaviour was perpetrated by the minority, however it is their job to reduce activities that are causing these deaths, and so they have introduced a ban on people going onto the beach
unfortunately it seems that a lot of photographers are still ignoring the warnings and going out on the beach!!
we all got some lovely shots and it was a wonderful experience without going on the beach!
many thanks to rachel shaw and dave bromwich at the lincolnshire wildlife trust!
PLEASE NO AWARDS OR PICTURES OR FLASHY BADGES
