Taupo, New Zealand
A group of youth in the small town of Taupo, New Zealand hold a 350 banner with water and mountains in the background.
A group of young people marched down a busy street in Taupo (there aren't many!) with a nice banner reading, "Protect Our Glaciers: 350" and got quite a few toots. We finally reached our 350 meeting spot and met heaps of members of the community for a 350 photoshoot to say we care about climate change. What was amazing is this. Oct 24 is a holiday weekend in New Zealand, a 3 day weekend, so many people were out of town. In fact, the organiser of the Taupo event had come up from Wellington and organised the event from there, having no idea if anyone would see the website and show up! Heaps of people did - well 27 anyways. As it turned out of those 27 some were from other cities on holiday as well and had checked the website ahead of time to see if there would be an action in Taupo! It was a great coming together of strangers for a beautiful cause. We hope that our small effort will contribute to positive and progressive negotiations at Copenhagen. Climate
change prevention may seem expensive, but life is worth a lot and reprecussions of climate change cost more! They should probably all read the Stern report before being allowed to negotiate!!!
PS: In our photos, there are some snowy, glacial peaks in the background that we would like to keep.
