The Oaks School is located in the heart of Hollywood, California, two blocks away from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One weekend a year, the entire school escapes the traffic and crowds and retreats to the mountains above Santa Barbara to camp under the real stars. This photo was taken at The Sage Hill Campsite in the Santa Ynez wilderness. The children treasure the freedom and spirit of the open chaparral, and disappear in delight to explore the environment until hunger drives them back to camp. We gather and sing into the night as the sparks of our campfire drift into the heavens.
Even in this idyllic scene, our children may have already felt the impact of climate change. Two of our camp locations have come close to being destroyed by wildfires. We are often unable to have campfires due to drought.
The Oaks School Green Committee gathered parents and kids for an Action Photo to be delivered to Copenhagen to help them craft a fair and binding climate agreement. The committee has been working to educate students and parents and lead us toward a more sustainable lifestyle. We are honored to be taking part in the efforts of 350.org
