Brussels Sprouts

    Newer Older

I found these little lovelies at the farmer’s market. I’ve always heard that they’re not a bitter after the first frost, which is still a while a few weeks off here in Ohio. They were tiny and looked like they’d pair perfectly with some bacon I had in the fridge, so I snapped up 2 pints of them.

I steamed them for a few minutes, then sauteed them with some diced bacon, along with a few shallots and some garlic. They were fantastic! I have to admit, I wasn’t a brussels sprouts fan a few years ago, I didn’t like them at all. I think the problem was that I had never had fresh brussels sprouts. Like many vegetables they’re much better fresh from the garden!

What’s your favorite way to enjoy brussels sprouts, or is it not at all?

They are so tiny--and they look delicious. I have always loved them, and before I left Texas a local grocery store had them on the stalk. You could buy the whole stalk and they stayed much fresher than after picked. We have had some good ones here in Washington, but the real wonder crop in my area is Asparagus--I love it when it is still small and very green. I think I will go cook dinner now as I am working up an appetite looking at these! .

They are precious! I'm waiting impatiently for ours to get big enough to harvest. Thank you for the beautiful tease in the meantime! :)

      LOvely! (picture and story!?

I love Brussel sprouts - no one else in my family is really keen...

They are nice shredded finely and then sauteed in a good oil with some shallots and garlic, and then I like to stir in some chopped walnuts, and maybe a little lemon juice.

Another favourite: mushroom, Brussel sprout and sweet chestnuts in red wine...yum!
