      This very much reminds me of the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, who didn't paint people often, but when he did there faces would be obscured or turned away from the viewer. In certain paintings, this created an anxiety as one could not perceive the reaction of the person of the painting, and thus did not know if the figure was terrified or excited by the situation. I find this very much in your work, and this picture in particular.
