Photo essay: Mobile C.A.R.E.
The Mobile C.A.R.E. Foundation launched 12 years ago. Three mobile clinics provide specialized asthma and allergy care to children at 40 sites in underserved areas of Chicago. Although patients see their own physicians for regular check-ups, specialized caregivers do more than prescribe medicine. Physicians and nurses coach asthmatics on behavior and lifestyle changes from breathing tips to study habits.

An estimated 9 percent of Illinois’ child population suffers from asthma, according to the state department of public health. Among children in Chicago, however, the rate is about 13 percent. And it is not spread equally throughout the city, with incidence in some predominantly black neighborhoods as high as 44 percent.

The patients’ names have been changed in this photo essay to protect medical confidentiality.
