Working in the last decades of the 18th century, Paul Theodor van Brussel painted flower still lifes in the virtuoso manner of Jan van Huysum (1682 - 1749). Van Huysum's grandiose decorative assemblages of flowers and fruit were themselves a continuation of a 17th-century Dutch tradition. Typical of this style are the stone parapet carved with the artist's signature and the date and the airy woodland view that forms the background for the pyramid of flowers and fruit.
