Just as Egyptians used boat in life on the Nile, so they believed such crafts were necessary in the Beyond. Two or model boats like this example were included in tombs of the First Intermediate Period and early Middle Kingdom. From the time of the Old Kingdom, Egyptians especially wished to voyage in the afterlife to Abydos in Southern Egypt, where one of the most important cult centers of Osiris, the great ruler of the dead, was located.
