Why the R.S.P.B Isn't Just About Birds..
I developed a very unreasonable phobia of Wasps. Just seeing one, or the thought of one, sends me into panic. Last year, I wouldn't wear perfume, refused to picnic, felt panic stood near anyone eating ice cream, or consuming sweet drinks, bought a zapper to kill them etc. Yellow Jackets are aggressive, and can and will sting. It's not surprising, many people dislike them.
Being a wildlife lover of most things, I knew, this year, I was going to try and get over my phobia by photographing one. I did better than that.
As family members of the R.S.P.B, we all get magazines, and a feature in the recent Bird Life for the children, was about pests, or perceived pests. Wasps were one pest they featured. I was already aware Wasp's were good, but interesting? I didn't think so. In the magazine, they wrote to look out for Wasps on top of wooden fence panels, scraping wood to build their nests. That is exactly what I did today. I got within less than a foot of this wasp. I wouldn't have imagined that at all last year. What's more, I looked out for more as we walked along, and suddenly felt more comfortable in their presence.
So thank you RSPB! Wasp's are not only purposeful, but interesting as well. I can't say I will ever feel totally "at ease" but that's better than killing them. :)
