Apart from drinking a toast with sparkling wine, in Germany we eat "Berliners" (those are the jelly-filled doughnuts in the upper right corner) on New Year's Eve. These are the reason JFK got more than a few giggles when he tried to show his solidarity with the people of West Germany by declaring, "ich bin ein Berliner".
