Field trip, Congaree National Park
There are 4 native palms in South Carolina. This one is surely the most widely distributed, preferring low woods of the coastal plain,. but getting well into the Piedmont, at least along the Savannah River drainage, and in Newberry and Union Counties. (You can also see it on the north side of Columbia at a couple of places on the east side of I-26.) The plants pictured here at CNP are quite robust, some of the leaves easily 6' high.
