Dunlin in Breeding Plumage

A Dunlin transitioning to its breeding plumage while on a stop over at the local refuge on its way to its arctic or sub-arctic breeding grounds..

Tens of thousands of shorebirds layover at the refuge on their way to their breeding grounds while they await the annual Horshoe Crab spawning along the shores of our local bays and estuaries. The eggs of the Horshoe Crab and their tremendous nutritional value are critical to the mass migrations of shorebirds on their way to the actic and sub-arctic breeding areas.
