Inside the Ball
This is a view from inside the “Ball Lookout” (Gömbkilátó), a hilltop landmark in the resort and wine-country town of Balatonboglár, Somogy County, Hungary. Named in honor of Somogy County native and zoologist Xántus János (John Xantus, 1825-1894), the Xántus János Gömbkilátó sphere provides vistas of Somogy County (to the left) and Lake Balaton, central Europe’s largest lake. Like many European intellectuals who had participated in failed rebellions of 1848-1849 (“The Forty-Eighters”), John Xantus lived the rest of his life as an influential exile in the United States.
This Ball Lookout tops the Várdomb, which is one of Balatonboglár’s two hills. The next town down the road, Fonyód, also has two hills–each topped by a lookout tower. The tower on the left in this picture, Fonyód Lookout Tower (Aussichtsturm Fonyód), is located 5.7 miles (9.2 km) to the WSW at Hóvirág utca 17 ( 46°44'39.42"N, 17°33'1.99"E). The tower on the right is located 6.25 miles (10.1 km) away at Fáy András utca 15 (46°44'18.18"N, 17°32'34.34"E). I took this picture on 22 July 2015.
