Quatrefoil and squint, St James' Church, Shere
These would have been used by Christine Carpenter, the the 14th century 'Anchoress of Shere'. She would receive the Blessed Sacrament through the Quatrefoil and could watch the mass through the squint. Food was put in by her friends and family through a grating in the outside wall, Squints were not uncommon in many mediaeval churches where they were used by lepers who could not enter the church itself.
