A few weekends ago, one of my dear friends from graduate school came to visit us. She is also an amateur photographer (still uses film), so we had a blast going on walks together, finding all sorts of fun things to shoot.
She has a couple shots of hers framed, and the essence of them is burned into my mind. Lovely flowers...at that time, I was using a point and shoot film camera and had no idea about depth of field, composition or anything except not to include too much sky (well, boring sky). I have always wanted to take photos like hers.
We made a trip to Filoli, which is a country estate in San Mateo County. It was built for a William Bowers Bourn, who was very very wealthy from owning a gold mine. You can read more about it here. The estate has fantastic gardens. This is just one of the roses that was still blooming.
