=Natural History Story=
Some creatures travel a long, subterranean road in their return to ash or dust. Abundant Devonian gastropods occur at Marengo Creek, a short hike from Virginia Falls, Nahanni National Park, Northwest Territories, Canada. Mother Nature has just freed these 300 million year old snails from their rock entombment. They came to light because, starting some 50 to 70 million years ago, a leading edge of the Earth's moving crust has been uplifting and eroding a succession of mountain ranges called the Cordillera Orogen. Fossils like these will tumble away to nothing in mountain streams from Alaska to Patagonia. At long last, their forms can become sand and clay.
