Caution: Fondue May Be Hot.

I used up my one allotted "cheesy"/"fondue" pun in a postcard to my friend Eve, so I'll just confess with a straight face that I really love The Melting Pot restaurants in the US. I know I'd lose cool points for that if I had any to lose, but cheese is good, a long slow meal is good, playing with your food is good, pumpernickel bread is good---literally: it's all good.

So obviously when we went to Switzerland, we had to do the real thing. It was SO tasty, and unlike at the Melting Pot, they brought way more than I could cram into me. I mean, I gave it my best, and I know Don did too. But we turned out to be unequal to the task.

Walliser Kanne is one of the restaurants I'll miss most from Basel---that and restaurant zum Schnabel in Trillengässlein, where I developed a burning girlcrush on "Falsche Schnecken"---faux escargots! The Internet seems to think it would be acceptable to make this with small mushrooms, but no no. Schnabel-style, it's tiny curls of beef filet placed in an escargot dish and sauced accordingly. Holy mother of god, is it good. A few days before the end of our trip, we tried to go back, but the note on the door indicated that August had come in mid-July... they were on a long vacation. I seriously almost cried, right there on the cobblestone street.
