Humphreys’ youth committed to running

HUMPHREYS GARRISON -- If you pass by Zoeckler Station on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons recently, you might ask yourself why a group of children are running on the outdoor track.

About 25 children, ranging from ages 5 to 14, meet twice a week at the Zoeckler Station track to be part of Humphreys’ first Youth Running Club. Coaches Dave Elger, Sarah Stahl and Molly Moore educate youth runners about the importance of fitness, wellness, and nutrition.

At one meet, the runners stretched out and began their workout with a one-mile relay. The coaches divided the runners in two groups and encouraged them to cheer for runners in the other group.

They practiced short distance running exercises by sprinting forward and backwards. They also ran in a single file behind their coaches to improve their coordination. After a long workout, the runners rewarded themselves by playing games like tag and Duck Duck Goose.

The Youth Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday at Zoeckler Station from 2:30 to 4 p.m. For more information, call 753-5601/5602 or sign up at the Rec Annex.
