japanese tawashi are dish scrubbies. sometimes called 'eco' tawashi, because you can use them with little or no soap (and because they are reusable). they clean by using the natural properties of acrylic yarn. there is also special tawashi anti bacterial acrylic yarn on the market.


this book has a great assortment of crocheted tawashi: flat in squares or circles or other shapes like tea cups or pots, hearts, or flowers; fruit slice designs, doughnut, stick, or ball shapes for washing different kinds dishes; a spiral design that is crochets in a simple strip, and several mitts, pocket, or other designs that you can put your hand inside to use. in addition, there are also designed for embellishing vegetable embroidery on the simple square tawashi.


written directions are in japanese, but like most japanese craft books, there are clear diagrams and photos showing the step by step process for making these projects, and the crochet directions are given in chart form. it includes a handy page showing the common crochet symbols and showing step by step how to make these stitches. this book is aimed at beginners, but offers enough variety to inspire intermediate or advanced crocheters.
