Moluccella laevis

    What is your secret for getting this to grow in California? I never see this in gardens here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and assumed it was because it needed more winter chilling or something.

    Hmm...I thought I commented but it looks like it didn't take. Apologies if two comments end up appearing.

    Believe it or not I got these as 6 packs. A lot of local nurseries here on the central coast were carrying them last spring. I have heard they are finicky so didn't have high hopes but I thought I would give them a try since they were so cheap. Not sure if it is supposed to be germination or growing in hot humid areas that gives them that reputation but here 2 miles from the Pacific Ocean they did great. All of them grew 3x3 feet and looked wonderful for several months. I just pulled the last one out two weeks ago or so.

    I'm hoping they will reseed a bit. I wish I knew which wholesaler it was that grows them. I'll be sure to ask the nurseries for a source next year if I see them again.
